Into the mind of inventor, Simone Giertz

In a time when the term "creator" is used loosely, Simone Giertz is an exception. She creates: robots and machines, a truck modified from a Tesla car, products, furniture and more, all through a humorous, lighthearted lens. That's on top of the YouTube videos she producers for an audience of almost 3 million followers. After following Simone's inventions for years, we've learned to expect the unexpected. So we were eager to learn what's been on her mind lately.

What’s the best compliment you received recently?

That I’m a good driver! Granted, I asked my friend to tell me that when she was riding in my car with me. Bottom line, nobody can compliment me better than I can.

What’s the last thing you read?

This question.

Ok, serious answer: I mostly read young adult fantasy books. I just want to be entertained, and I don’t like reality getting in the way of that.

What book do you want to read next?

I don’t know! What do you think I should read next?

A quote that’s meaningful to you?

"Being famous is like having really big boobs: it makes some people want to take photos with you or have sex with you, but it doesn’t say anything about who you are." – my mom

Best gift you’ve ever given?

I’ve been making a lot of stained glass portraits of my friends’ dogs. When in doubt, just put your friend’s pet on something and they’ll love it.

Where do you want to travel to next?

I’m heading to Jordan next month! I’m filming a project with UNHCR (The UN Refugee Agency) there. I’m very excited/terrified of messing something up.

What would you buy, if money weren’t an issue?

A societal system where we celebrate value created rather than value captured.

What hobby would you take up, if you had the time?

Dancing! And take my dog to agility more often.

What’s an image or piece of art you can’t get out of your head?

I have a scar from brain surgery that I literally cannot get out of my head. Not sure if it qualifies as art, but I’m into it.

A product of any kind you’ve been appreciating lately?

The coat hanger design that I’ve spent almost three years working on now. Not sure when I’ll release it at yetch.store, but hopefully this autumn. Self-promotion, I know! But at least it’s honest. The design is amazing.

The funniest thing you’ve seen lately?

I saw a meme along the lines of “Meet the Eight-Year-Old Intimacy Coordinator on the Set of the Barbie Movie” and it made me laugh out loud. Brought me right back.

If you could build an extension of your own mind, what would it look like? How would it work?

I like my mind the way it is, honestly! But if I could send my anxiety on a retreat now and then that would be very nice.
