Here's what's on our minds.

💭 The work of Saul Bass

Saul Bass looked at a movie or brand and knew exactly how to make it hit. One moment of pure visual truth. Hitchcock trusted him. Kubrick trusted him. And these are not men who trusted easily. He made title sequences that were already better than most full films. He made posters you remember decades later without knowing why.

His whole philosophy was almost annoyingly simple: “Design is thinking made visual.” He believed that if your idea wasn’t clear enough to be distilled into one honest image, then you didn’t understand your idea yet.

💭 The gift of silence

“Collaboration is necessary, to a degree. And it’s of course inevitable for most of us working in an agency or company setting. We do need meetings. Collaborative software has made work more efficient. These things are necessary for one part of the creative journey. But right now, they’re feeling more like a cheap distraction from meaningful work.”

💭 This quote from Susan Sontag

“Pay attention. It’s all about paying attention. It’s all about taking in as much of what’s out there as you can, and not letting the excuses and the dreariness of some of the obligations you’ll soon be incurring narrow your lives. Attention is vitality. It connects you with others. It makes you eager. Stay eager.”

💭 This interview with writer & reader Lucy Fuggle

I only want to live in peace and plant potatoes and dream! That’s been my life motto for a while. (I actually have it pinned to the top of mymind!) It’s from book one of The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strips, in which Sniff tries (and fails) to convince Moomintroll that he should be a rich and famous artist with exhibitions.”
